Unveiling Photovoltaic Layers
In this blog post, we will delve into the various layers that comprise a photovoltaic module and their vital roles in harnessing solar energy efficiently. From the robust frame that provides structural support to the intricate photovoltaic cells responsible for electricity generation, each layer plays a crucial part in the panel's overall performance. We will examine the transparent and protective glass cover, the antireflection coating that enhances light absorption, the encapsulant material that secures the components, the semiconductor-based photovoltaic cells themselves, the insulating backsheet for protection, and the junction box facilitating electricity transfer [1,2]. Here are the main layers of a solar panel:
Frame: The sturdy framework that provides structural support and protection to the solar panel, ensuring its durability and stability.
Glass: A transparent and resilient cover that forms the front surface of the solar panel. It shields the internal components while allowing sunlight to pass through and reach the photovoltaic cells.
Antireflection Coating: A thin layer applied to the front glass, which reduces reflections and improves light absorption by minimizing the loss of incoming sunlight.
Encapsulant Material: A specialized material known as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), serves as a bonding and protective agent. It encapsulates and secures the photovoltaic cells, front glass, and backsheet, enhancing the panel's performance and resilience.
Photovoltaic Cells: These are the essential elements of the solar panel responsible for converting sunlight into electricity. Made primarily of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, they generate an electric current when exposed to light.
Insulating Backsheet: A layer positioned on the rear side of the solar panel, providing electrical insulation and safeguarding the photovoltaic cells against moisture, physical damage, and environmental factors.
Junction Box: A weatherproof enclosure located at the back of the solar panel, housing electrical connectors and wiring. It facilitates the collection and transfer of the generated electricity to an external circuit or system.
