How effective are solar panels in the rain?
It is a known fact that solar PV panels can convert solar radiation into electricity, so as long as there is sunlight, there will be electricity. [3] But have you ever wondered how the rain would affect this process? Most people would think that solar panels would be nonfunctional because it’s raining, but that is simply not true.
During a sunny day, the graph of the power generated by solar panels resembles a bell curve, with the apex of the curve being at noon when the sun is the hottest and most direct. [1] This is when solar panels can work best. However, during rainy days, solar panels will still be able to do their job, but just not as efficiently, as the amount of sunlight they receive is limited. Aside from direct sunlight, solar panels can also absorb reflected light and use it to perform its job. Sunlight can bounce off buildings, the ground, and even bodies of water, and solar panels scan utilize this to perform its function. [2] The graph of its power input would not be as high and consistent as previously, but the power is not zero!
It can even be said that rain is beneficial for solar panels. It will be able to clean off the panels by washing away all the dust and other debris that may have fallen on the solar panels which affects their power production. [2] So rain isn’t so bad! Think of it as the rain watering your entire garden for you during its visit.
